SIM CARDS:

Again same rules apply, travelling with a cell phone, be sure it is unlocked if you want to have the opportunity to use a sim card from another country.  In Ecuador, Movistar is the common carrier, but Claro seems to have better coverage in remote areas based off the readings I did.  The  law states that you have to be an Ecuadorian citizen to purchase a SIM card. Most people find a store that will activate it in someone else’s name, and then transfer it to you a few days later. The store will still want identification however, so bring your passport.

Water:  Not Potable, drink only filtered bottled water.

GENERAL TRANSPORTATION:

Intercontinental and International Travel:

  1. Ecuador to Peru:
    1. Cooperativa Loja:  Which provides intra-Ecuador and direct routes to Peru.  Address: Lauro Guerrero y 10 de Agosto Boletería: (593-7) 2570 505 - 2579014 Quito: Terminal Terrestre Quitumbe. - Google maps to office -
  2. Ecuador to Columbia:

Requires a few bus switches to cross borders, I have yet to find a bus ride direct from like lets say Quito to Cali or Medellin...  Here are a few tips I can offer.

  1. Do not take a night bus from Pasto to Popayan, many stories have been  told that there have been numerous hold ups and robboeries.
  2. Make sure to get your exit stamp, & entry stamp, some people state that it is easy to simply cross borders without speaking to an immigration official.
  3. The border on the Panamericana between Ecuador and Colombia is totally safe.  (Based on multiple travelers)
  4. Once you cross the border, you should  get a taxi to Ipiales as it is far to walk.
  5. If you must sleep a night stay in Popayan, there is a Hostel called Koala Inn hostel.
  6. DO NOT TRAVEL AT NIGHT
